Her outrageous gimmicks would have been too much for the generation of parents back then. The reason she is decent know is because people have become more open minded. In all aspects music, sexuality, etc. Parents wouldn't have bought the cd for their kids back then. (We had no choice but to have CDs, some of you younger fans don't know about that). Britney was a shock to parents with her sexual ways, and that wasn't that crazy. Gaga would have blown their minds. The generations have changed that is why gaga is even in music today. When she first came out she was "controversial"; if she came out with the same gay marriage support and outrageous behavior back in the 90s, she woulda got shut down super quick.
